Standardized and Non-Standardized Field Sobriety Tests
The field sobriety tests on the side of the road should be broken down into two different types of field sobriety tests. One type is what is referred to as standardized field sobriety tests. This type of test has been studied, approved, and allegedly scientifically validated.
Then there are non-standardized field sobriety tests. So there are two groups, and with the first group of standardized field sobriety tests, there is a specific way that they are supposed to be given. There’s a scoring that goes along with it so an officer can tell whether a person is doing well or not on those tests.
The nonstandard field sobriety tests are just a mixed bag and there’s no real rhyme or reason to how the tests are given, who gives them and what the results mean.
